Sports Jersey Sizing Guide

Every sport sizes jerseys differently. Here is how to measure correctly for NBA, NFL, football, MLB and NHL jerseys and avoid the most common mistakes.

Why jersey sizing is different from clothing sizing

Sports jerseys are not cut like everyday clothing. They are designed for specific athletic movements, worn over specific layers or equipment, and produced in a different size paradigm from standard fashion sizing. An NBA jersey size M is cut for a person much larger than a clothing size M; an NHL jersey L fits across the shoulders for a person wearing shoulder pads. Applying clothing size logic to jersey orders is the most common source of sizing errors.

The solution is simple: take measurements and compare them to the specific chart in each listing. Do not order by letter size without checking the chart. Two jerseys labelled L may differ by five centimetres in chest width. The chart is the only reliable reference.

NBA jersey sizing

NBA jerseys are cut wide and short. The chest circumference for a size S is typically around 100 to 104 cm, which is standard clothing L or XL territory. The body is short — about 66 to 70 cm for a medium — which is shorter than most T-shirts. If you want the jersey to reach your hip, check the body length measurement.

For the fan cut: measure your chest circumference, add two to four centimetres and find the matching size on the chart. For the authentic cut: use your exact chest measurement with no addition. Both cuts look best when the shoulder seam sits at or just past your actual shoulder, so check shoulder width as well as chest.

NFL jersey sizing

NFL jerseys are cut for shoulder pads and are the widest jerseys by far. A size S NFL jersey typically measures 110 to 115 cm at the chest. An adult who normally wears a clothing M should order an NFL S, and an adult who normally wears a clothing XL should order an NFL L or XL. The shoulder width is also very wide — expect to look at yourself and see the seam several centimetres past your shoulder bone, which is the intended proportion.

Measure the chest width and the shoulder seam width on an NFL jersey you already own or on the loosest-fitting top you own that still looks acceptable when worn. Both numbers together give you the information you need to pick the right size from the chart.

Football jersey sizing

Football jerseys for casual fan wear use a slightly different sizing system than NBA or NFL. Fan cut football jerseys have a chest size that runs roughly one size larger than standard clothing — a jersey size S fits a standard M chest. Player cut jerseys follow clothing sizes more closely because they are designed to fit close to the body without equipment underneath.

For fan cut: measure your chest and find the size on the chart that is two to four centimetres larger. For player cut: use your chest measurement directly. Body length varies between teams and kit versions, so check the listed length against a T-shirt you own if length matters.

MLB jersey sizing

Baseball jerseys are the most loosely cut of any sport. They are designed for a relaxed, comfortable fit with room for batting and throwing movement. They run closer to standard clothing sizes than NBA or NFL jerseys — a clothing M maps roughly to an MLB M — but the silhouette is much wider and longer than a fashion T-shirt. The traditional loose look means most buyers are comfortable ordering their standard size or one size larger.

NHL jersey sizing

NHL jerseys are among the most challenging to size because of the very wide shoulder cut. The shoulder seam is designed to sit far past the natural shoulder, and the body is relatively short. Measuring the shoulder seam width from your reference jersey or a wide casual shirt is essential. The chest measurement alone will not tell you whether the jersey sits correctly on your shoulders, which is the most visible fit issue with hockey jerseys.

For any jersey, also check the size label matches your order in the QC photos. This is a simple check that catches errors before the parcel ships.

Frequently asked questions

Why do jersey sizes differ so much from clothing sizes?
Jerseys are cut for equipment, movement and athletic proportions, not everyday wear.
Should I always size up for a jersey?
It depends on the sport. NFL and NBA jerseys run large; MLB runs true to size; football fan cut runs one size large.
What is the most important measurement for each sport?
NBA: chest. NFL: chest and shoulder. Football: chest. MLB: chest. NHL: shoulder width.
Can I return a jersey if the size is wrong?
Agent services have limited return options. Checking the size chart carefully before ordering is the most reliable protection.
